Victoria faced these challenges with unwavering determination, dodging death on makeshift rafts with her family on the open sea.

Unable to defend herself in a language she had not yet mastered, the shopkeeper wrongly insisted Victoria had pocketed a pack of gum, a cruel accusation that left her feeling humiliated and her mother in despair. It was a stark reminder of their changed circumstances, transitioning from wealth in their homeland to struggling immigrants in a new country.
